UT Appoints Schrick Head of Animal Science Department

The Department of Animal Science at the University of Tennessee has a new leader.

Dr. F. Neal Schrick, a full professor in the department, will assume the role of department head effective Nov. 1.

“Dr. Schrick’s track record as a UT faculty member speaks for itself,” said Dr. Larry R. Arrington, chancellor of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. “I’m pleased to have someone of his caliber leading the Department of Animal Science and look forward to seeing the department continue its tradition of excellence.”

Schrick joined the UT faculty in 1994 as an assistant professor.

On his path to full professor, Schrick garnered several awards for his teaching and research in the area of reproductive physiology and endocrinology in cattle.

Schrick is the principal or co-principal investigator on more than $7.6 million dollars in grants and contracts from state, federal and industrial sources. He has one published patent.

The new department head also routinely participates as a speaker at numerous international, national, state and local events on causes of reproductive loss in cattle and methods for improvement.

“We had an outstanding pool of well qualified candidates for this position,” said Dr. Robert Burns, assistant dean for UT Extension and chair of the Animal Science department head search committee. “Dr. Schrick’s commitment to excellence for the Department of Animal Science and his strong knowledge Tennessee livestock and poultry producer’s needs helped set him apart from other candidates.”

Before joining UT, Schrick served as a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at West Virginia University.

The professor earned both his master’s in reproductive physiology and Ph.D. in animal physiology from Clemson University. His bachelor’s degree in animal science is from Oklahoma State University.

Schrick was raised in Frederick, Okla., on a beef cattle, wheat and cotton family farm.

The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture provides instruction, research and public service through the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources; the UT College of Veterinary Medicine; UT AgResearch, including its system of 10 research and education centers; and UT Extension with offices in all 95 Tennessee counties.
