2020 Tennessee Annual Crop Production Summary

Corn production in Tennessee is estimated at 140 million bushels, up 4% from the November forecast and down 13% from the previous crop. Yield was estimated at 170 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from the previous forecast and down 7 bushels from the 2019 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 825,000 acres, down 85,000 acres from 2019. U.S. corn production is estimated at 14.2 billion bushels, down 2% from the November forecast and up 4% from 2019. Yields averaged 172.0 bushels per acre, down 3.8 bushels from the previous forecast and up 4.5 bushels from 2019. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 82.5 million acres, down slightly from the November forecast and up 1% from 2019.

Soybean production for Tennessee is estimated at 81.0 million bushels, up 2% from the November forecast and up 26% from 2019. Yield was estimated at 50.0 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushel from November and up 3.0 bushels from a year ago. Acreage for harvest as beans was estimated at 1.62 million acres, up 250,000 acres from the previous year. U.S. soybean production is forecast at 4.14 billion bushels, down 1% from the November forecast and up 16% from last year. Yields averaged 50.2 bushels per acre, down 0.5 bushels from the previous forecast and up 2.8 bushels from last year. Area for harvest is estimated at 82.3 million acres, up slightly from the November forecast and up 10% from 2019.

Tennessee cotton production totals 610,000 bales, down 10% from the December forecast and down 36% from last year. Cotton yields averaged 1,065 pounds per acre, down 122 pounds from last month and down 73 pounds per acre from the previous year. Producers harvested 275,000 acres, unchanged from the November forecast and down 130,000 acres from 2019. U.S. all cotton production is estimated at 15.0 million 480-pound bales, down 6% from the December forecast and down 25% from 2019. Yields were estimated at 825 pounds per acre, down 25 pounds from last month and up 2 pounds from last year. Upland cotton production is estimated at 14.4 million 480-pound bales, down 25% from 2019. Pima cotton production is forecast at 552,000 480-pound bales, down 19% from 2019.

Tennessee burley tobacco production is estimated at 4.34 million pounds, up 3% from the October forecast and down 32% from 2019. Yield was estimated at 1,550 pounds per acre, 50.0 pounds from October forecast and down 50.0 pounds from the 2019 crop. Harvested acreage was estimated at 2,800 acres, down 1,200 acres from last year’s crop. U.S. production is estimated at 84.7 million pounds, down 9% from last year. Burley growers harvested 43,310 acres, down 11% from 2019. Yields were estimated at 1,956 pounds per acre, up 46 pounds from last year.

Production of Tennessee dark fire-cured tobacco is estimated at 16.5 million pounds, down 6% from the previous year. Dark air-cured tobacco production is estimated at 8.51 million pounds, up 32% from last year.

Other hay production in Tennessee is estimated at 4.07 million tons, up 1% from last year.
